In New York, a makeshift memorial in form of a white bicycle locked to 'No Parking' poles is erected anonymously for each cyclist killed in traffic. Nobody knows who installs them, but the city unofficially tolerates them. They become successful squatters in public space, silent reminders of recurrent tragedies. Sadly, over ninety such monuments can be found in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.
I photographed such ghost bikes in Manhattan and Brooklyn in the still of the night using a flash, making the ghosts visible in the dark.
