Outdoor adventures are an important part of the tourist offerings in the Engadine: mountain - and ice climbing, ski touring, canyoning, and river rafting entice visitors to test their limits. However, this thrill also carries risks: every year, skiers and snowboarders are killed in avalanches; fatal canyoning accidents have also occurred in Switzerland, and there have been fatalities while river rafting as well. A tragic such accident occurred in 1993 on the Inn River near Scuol, claiming the lives of nine people. The Flaz River, which flows through Pontresina, empties into the Inn a few kilometers downstream.

Viewed from above and especially from  the vantage point of the jetty, installed by the township as vista point for tourists, the suspended boat appears almost as if it were floating in the Flaz, 50 meters below. Like a ghost ship, it hovers over the abyss, creating a surreal feeling of instability.
