Dimensions: approx. 348 x 278 cm
Material: Flag fabric, polyester
This site-specific flag, mounted under a bridge of Via Maistra, came from reflections on Lucio Fontana's revolutionary 1960s paintings titled "Spatial Concept": primed canvases pierced by vertical cuts. In Pontresina, a repeatedly slashed canvas becomes a flag, that is visible and hidden at the same time.
In war, the white flag symbolizes surrender or an offer of peace. In the context of the exhibition, between the riverbed and the concrete bridge, this white flag represents an offer to nature, a willingness to surrender and make peace: a utopia that the artist shares with many, but far too few.
The work references the installation "La Réproduction Interdite" (Forbidden Reproduction), created in front of the Hotel Kronenhof for Vias d'Art anno 2020: at that time, a painting by René Magritte was reinterpreted.
